The size of the aquarium that you buy for your betta will determine how long it lives. The bigger the aquarium, the longer the lifespan of your fish. Adding some sort of aeration from a stone bubbler or filter will also lengthen the life of your fish.
It is a widespread misconception that bettas prefer small spaces. If you give them a large tank to swim in, they will love you for it. I don’t put them in anything smaller than a one gallon tank with a stone bubbler. I also have a 2.5 gallon tank with a filter. Putting them in a 5 gallon tank allows you to install a heater. Bettas like their water to be at least 78 to 80 degrees.
Make sure that the aquarium has a cover on it. Bettas are very good jumpers and they will jump right out of the tank. I had a tetra commit suicide one day while I was at work. It’s not a nice thing to come home to.
